چکیده
The developmental stages [4] of the chick [5] embryo were examined by Viktor Hamburger [6] and Howard L. Hamilton [7] in ?A Series of Normal Stages in the Development of the Chick Embryo,? published in the Journal of Morphology [8] in 1951. These stages were published to standardize the development of the chick [5] based on varying laboratory conditions and genetic differences. The stages Hamburger and Hamilton assigned were determined by the visible features of the chick [5] embryo. The first stage begins just prior to the primitive streak [9] , with the formation of the embryonic shield, and the final stage, forty-six, ends at the hatching of the chick [5].

Hamburger-Hamilton Staging Series (1951)
In 1951 Viktor Hamburger [4] and Howard Hamilton created an embryonic staging series from a combination of photographs and drawings from other researchers. The Hamburger?Hamilton stages are a sequence of images depicting 46 chronological stages in chick [5] development. The images begin with a fertilized egg [6] and end with a fully developed chick [5]. The Hamburger-Hamilton staging series was...
متن کاملA series of normal stages in the development of the chick embryo.
The preparation of a series of normal stages of the cliick embryo does not need justification at a time when chick embryos are not only widely used in descriptive and experimental embryology but are proving to be increasingly valuable in medical research, as in work on viruses and cancer. The present series was planned in connection with the preparation of a new edition of Lillie’s Deuelopiiaen...
متن کاملEarly in-vitro histological chondral differentiation.
In vitro chondrogenesis is possible in the chick embryo from stage 4 of Hamburger and Hamilton (1951), only 18-19 hours of incubation, before somite formation. In stage 4 of Hamburger and Hamilton (1951) the chondroblasts are placed laterally to the primitive streak and notochord cells are not necessary for cartilage differentiation.

Developmental biology research has used various avian species as model organisms for studying morphogenesis, with the chick embryo being used by the majority of groups. The focus on the chick embryo led Hamburger and Hamilton to develop their definitive staging series nearly 60 years ago and this series is still the mainstay of all laboratories working with avian embryos. The focus on the chick...
متن کامل"The Effects of Wing Bud Extirpation on the Development of the Central Nervous System in Chick Embryos" (1934), by Viktor Hamburger
German embryologist Viktor Hamburger [4] came to the US in 1932 with a fellowship provided by the Rockefeller Foundation [5]. Hamburger started his research in Frank Rattray Lillie?s laboratory at the University of Chicago [6]. His two-year work on the development of the central nervous system [7] (CNS) in chick [8] embryos was crystallized in his 1934 paper, ?The Effects of Wing Bud Extirpatio...
